Our Girls

SPOKEN WORD POEM

Girls Inc. Westchester has inspired us to go after our dreams, giving us the skills we need to succeed, and empowered us to express ourselves. This poem grew out of our discussions in our Girls Leadership Council. Here’s a glimpse of who we are and why we are the ones… who are strong, smart and bold.

WE ARE THE ONES WHO ARE STRONG, SMART, AND BOLD

I was the one who didn’t have a family.
I was the one who became an adult.

I was the one my
elders rested on.
Why is it always my fault?
I am the one who looks out for others.
I’m the one who’s still full of surprises.
I’m the one who looks out into the horizon.
We are not only girls but a strong, smart, and bold
family who sticks together (Everyone)

We are the ones who strive to connect with others.
We want to show others that they are not alone.
We make it known that everyone matters.
We allow voices to be heard.
We are the ones who listen.
We are the ones who stand up for each other and protect one another;
Who guide each other in the best direction
We love being together as a team.
We are what we say we are.
We are the ones who tell it like it is.
We are
teens that no one seems to understand struggling to identify right from wrong.
But, despite this, we don’t give up,
We face our challenges head on.
We are the ones who complain about the circumstances, but continue to persevere relentlessly.
We never give up.
We are the ones who need guidance and nurturing.
We are the ones who smile through the day and cry ourselves to sleep at night.
We are the ones who ignore our pain and look deeper to find insight.
We are the ones who keep going on after being humiliated, fight after fight.
We are the ones who are stuck between “treat others how they treat you” and
“treat others the way you want to be treated”.
We are the ones who lose ourselves in the process of valuing someone that we love and forget how special we are.
We are the ones who offer ourselves.
We are the ones who say no.
We are the ones who have to deal with the feeling of pride in our throat when crying is not an option.
We are the ones who share our fears
Who try to empower and protect.
We are the ones who love unconditionally.
We are the ones who get overlooked, who are unfairly oppressed
We are the ones struggling to reach our maximum potential.
While we are forced to hear the voices of others trying to tell us what we are.
We just want to find our place and make a mark.
We are the ones who beat the stereotypes.
We are the ones who stay out of trouble.
We are the ones who wonder. Who stay awake to dream
We are the moldings of the sculpture of life.
We are the ones who help others.
We are the ones who try to be the best in everything we do.
We make goals and commit to them.
We are the ones who will become doctors and lawyers.
We are the teens that are set up to low expectations,
BUT will be the next entrepreneurs
We are not what you choose to label us,
We are the ones that can see each other’s perfections,
We are the next generation of Strong, Smart, and Bold.
