Girl Leadership Council

The Girls Leadership Council is offered to girls 8th-12th grade, in-person and offers leadership development, journalism and mentorship opportunities, hands-on experiential activities, discussions and community engagement. The GLC Meetings are typically every 2nd Saturday of the month, 10am-1pm, October 2024-June 2025 and meets at the Girls Inc. of Westchester White Plains office. The activities and key concepts of the Girls Inc. of Westchester Leadership Council (GLC) is to support girls in developing leadership skills, connecting with their community, and gaining a sense of empowerment and responsibility for championing social change.

Our concept of girls’ leadership is guided by two major theoretical frameworks. Phase One includes a series of interactive activities around the core elements of leadership: community, power, culture and heritage, rights and responsibilities, and social change. Phase Two, girls work as a team on a community action project. They are also key decision makers and co hosts of the Annual GIWC Youth Leadership Summit. This summit helps girls find an issue of shared concern, determining changes that need to occur, and carrying out their plan of action. Girls also have a chance to recruit women to work with them as equal partners as they take action to improve their communities and understand the difference between “Community Action Versus Community Service.”
