Our History

Girls Inc. is the longest-running girls’ leadership organization.

Our Mission

Girls Incorporated of Westchester County is an affiliate of Girls Incorporated, a 161 year old national nonprofit providing more than 140,000 girls across the U.S. and Canada with life-changing experiences and solutions to the unique challenges girls face. The Girls Inc. Experience consists of people, an environment, and programming that, together, empower girls to succeed. Trained staff and volunteers build lasting, mentoring relationships in girls-only spaces that are physically and emotionally safe and where girls find a sisterhood of support with shared drive, mutual respect, and high expectations. Hands-on, research-based programs provide girls with the skills and knowledge to set goals, overcome obstacles, and improve academic performance. At Girls Inc., girls grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

Girls Inc. was founded in 1864 to serve girls and young women who were experiencing upheaval in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Across the decades, we adapted to meet the specific environmental challenges facing girls and young women, always working in partnership with schools and communities, and guided by our founders’ fundamental belief in the inherent potential of each girl. Woven into those early girls’ clubs are the same core values of Girls Inc. today: the importance of creating a supportive gathering place for girls to learn and to share in sisterhood and a strong premise that each girl can develop her capacities and self-confidence and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

Girls Inc. inspires all youth to be strong, smart, and bold.

Our Vision

Powerful girls* in an equitable society.

Girls Inc. of the Valley welcomes girls, regardless of their assigned sex at birth, and gender-expansive youth.

We are committed to promoting equality and justice by welcoming all youth who experience gender-based oppression
(including but not limited to transgender girls, cisgender girls, transmasculine youth, and non-binary individuals).
