Elizabeth – Strong, Smart, and Bold is more than a slogan; it’s our mission.
Strong, Smart, and Bold is more than a slogan; it’s our mission.
Dr. Sharlise Smith-Rodriguez: I met Elizabeth and her guardian Sandra during our Glow & Grow Summer Program in our White Plains office. When Elizabeth confidently walked through the doors at 9:00am, she was full of energy and ready to start the day. She joined our summer program to make connections with other girls and to learn skills that she could use during the school year. Her guardian knew that the academic portion of the summer program would be challenging for Elizabeth since she was below grade level. Throughout the summer program, she was able to use what she was being taught to build her confidence and use her voice to advocate for her needs. From there I saw her grow. We made the necessary connections and recommendations for additional services that her family would need to advocate for in the upcoming school year – and now, she has never looked back. Girls Inc. of Westchester offered a safe space where Elizabeth could learn, express herself, start to make lifelong friends, and feel the love of a supportive and reinforcing group. Elizabeth and Sandra were very grateful. Today, Elizabeth is thriving in her new school and has the resources needed to help her be successful socially, emotionally, and academically.
Throughout Westchester County, there are many girls like Elizabeth. They face academic, social- emotional, and cultural obstacles which can erode their self-confidence and limit their success. Some, like Elizabeth, have chaotic home lives. Others are bullied at school. Some face emotional setbacks while others lack direction. In some cases, learning disabilities, poverty, neglect or gender stereotyping limit their progress. They need opportunities that will empower and engage them, not just for a moment – but for their lifetimes.
Girls Inc. of Westchester County provides support and creates new opportunities for all girls. We have the resources to understand their needs and are committed to building a supportive community that enriches their social, emotional, and academic lives. Girls Inc. helps girls play an active role in their development that builds confidence and self-esteem, leadership skills, and a foundation for future success.”
